Norfolk offers a wide range and diversity of employment opportunities to suit all interests and skill levels. There are approximately 30,000 businesses in Norfolk and the workforce is predicted to grow by 48,000 over the next 10 years.  In terms of economic activity the Southern area of Norfolk is a relatively diverse area. The North of the district is more heavily influenced by the city of Norwich, where almost a third of residents are employed. To the south, the economy becomes more rural in nature. Two of the major employment sectors in the country are Financial Service and Retail.

Norfolk is home to major businesses within the Financial Service sector, which serve the UK from Norwich. Financial and business services make the largest private sector contribution to the economy in Norfolk and employ one in three of the Norwich workforce. Aviva is considered the largest private sector employer in Norfolk offering many job and career opportunities. Other companies recognised as major employers in the county include Marsh and Virgin.

Norwich is considered to be one of the UK’s top 10 retailing centres and is home to large Department Stores, Small Independents and famous high street stores. Out of city areas such as Kings Lynn and Great Yarmouth provide a wealth of retail parks.

Over 20% of employment in the county is in the agriculture and food industries, many of which are based in rural locations. Employers within this sector include Bernard Mathews, Kettle Foods and Pasta Foods. Norfolk has an above average share of manufacturing jobs, employers include Norfolk’s largest Engineering Company, Group Lotus and Bux Corrugated Packaging.

Living in Norfolk

Norfolk is a large low-lying rural county in the East of England. It has borders with Suffolk to the South and Cambridgeshire to the west. The county offers a wide diversity of landscapes including the Broads, sandy beaches, heathland forests and urban areas such as the county’s town and only city, Norwich, Kings Lynn and Great Yarmouth, along with a number of attractive market towns and villages including Diss, and Aylsham.

The county has a population of over 850,000 people of which over half live in rural areas, with 38% of the county’s population living in the three major built up areas, Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Kings Lynn.

Norfolk is ideally located 100 miles to both London and mainland Europe. Norfolk is one of the few counties in England that does not have a Motorway, however road links provide easy access to London and the Midlands. The Great Eastern Main Line is a major railway from London Liverpool Street Station to Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk.

The county town Norwich is home to Norfolk’s only University, the University of East Anglia and is the county’s main business and culture centre.
