Norwich is the business capital of the East. It has produced a highly skilled, qualified and stable workforce and the largest economy in terms of employment, in the East of England which is expected to grow by 27,000 jobs by 2026.
The city’s economy, previously predominantly industrial based, has evolved throughout the eighties and nineties to become chiefly a service-based economy. Employment in Norwich is largely dominated by 60 large organisations, which are responsible for employing over a third of the city’s workforce. It is also host to more than 50 national/regional headquarters including, Aviva (formally Norwich Union), The One Account, John Innes Centre, KLM UK and May Gurney.
Norwich is one of the UK’s most significant financial centres and has the largest cluster of financial services in the East of England. The financial sector in Norwich is largely dominated by the Insurance industry. Aviva (formally Norwich Union) is noticeably the largest employer, employing around 6,000 Norwich based staff. There are a broad number of insurance, finance and banking organisations that have had a significant presence in Norwich, including Royal Bank of Scotland, and Marsh.
Norwich is also a thriving industry centre for creative/media organisations, which include long establish companies, regional broadcasting headquarters such as Anglia TV and BBC TV East, and the UK’s largest independent regional newspaper, Archant Media Group.
The public sector is responsible for employing around 20% of Norwich’s workforce; Norwich City Council is the largest employer within this sector, followed by the Health Authority.

Norwich Research Park is now one of Europe’s largest single-site concentrations of research in Health, Food and Environmental Sciences. It is responsible for employing around 9,000 people and encompasses world class research institutions such as the John Innes Centre, Sainsbury Laboratory, and the Institute of Food Research.
Norwich is home to two universities which offer excellent higher and further education provision, these include Norwich University College of the Arts and The University of East Anglia (one of the UK’s top 20 universities). The University hosts the new Medical School and is also the headquarters for the Tyndall Centre which is famous for Climate Change Research.Living in Norwich

Norwich is currently ranked in the top 10 retail centres in the UK, standing it higher than larger cities such as Edinburgh, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and York. The city offers everything from the well known high-street stores in its two malls to an impressive and varied selection of independent clothing, art and record shops which line its labyrinthine network of cobblestone streets.
Carrow Road Football Stadium is home to Norwich City Football Club.
